At the start of almost every interview, the interviewer will ask you to tell them about yourself. The interview nerves are at their height as the interview begins. This is also a really open question and you might not be sure what to say, how to answer the question or what they want to hear.
What many candidates don’t realise is that there is actually no right or wrong answer, within reason, to this ‘tell me about yourself’ question. The employer is just giving you an opportunity to talk about you so they can see who you are and how you will fit in with the team and the culture of the company.
In this blog post we have put together three steps to answering the question ‘tell me about yourself’ so you can smash your next interview:
- Discuss your current situation. Take your time to explain the job you currently do and the responsibilities of the job role. Talk about any major achievements or highlights in that position. Use this opportunity to share, in a positive way, why you are looking to change carers or leave the job.
- Next, talk through your work experience. Work backwards through your CV highlighting any key achievements. Summarise each job role talking about what you did and the skills you’ve gained. If possible, tie in these skills or achievements to how they will help you if you were to get the job you’re being interviewed for. If there are results that you can quantify, then definitely talk about these in your interview too.
- Summarise your answer to ‘tell me about yourself’ by connecting your background, interests and qualifications back to the job you are applying for. You can finish answering this question by explaining how you think the skills and experience you have gained will make you successful in this job role. End by confirming the ways that you job you’re being interviewed aligns with your career goals.
As we share in all our blog posts about interview tips – practice and preparation are key to interview success. Take some time to look over your CV and the job description. Look for similarities and bring these up in the interview.
