There was a time when your first job was your last job. A job and a career were for life and changing careers or industries was unheard of. Thankfully those days are no more. It is now perfectly normal to change careers or industries at any stage of your life. Having a job that you enjoy is now more important than just having a job.
However, changing jobs can be scary. This is especially the case if you have been in one job for some time. So how do you know when you change jobs? We have put some tell-tale signs together below that will help you see if now, is the time you should change jobs.
If you spend each day dreading going to work the next day, then something isn’t quite right. Take the time to think about the issue. Is it too much work, monotonous work, awkward colleagues, a long journey to work, or you’re just not enjoying it anymore? Think about what you don’t like and decide if it can be changed at the job that you’re in by speaking to a manager, or if it can only be resolved by changing jobs.
If you are desperate to climb the ladder and achieve more for your career, then there can be nothing more frustrating than being stuck in a job with no future. While you might not want to take the step to the next level of management, a change of company or industry, but staying in the same role, could give you the new challenges and growth that you are looking for. Alternatively, you could look for a higher-level job at another business if there is no room for promotion in your current job?
For many of us, we don’t just work to earn money. We want to work for a company we are proud of. A company that does good things and we are excited to tell others about. There are jobs out there that make a really difference and positive change in the world. If that’s what you’re looking for and you’re lacking pride in where you currently work, now is the time to change jobs so you can find a job where you feel proud to work. If you dread telling new people where you work or what you do, that’s a tell-tale sign that it’s time for change.
We all need a pat on the back, thanks and praise from time to time. If you feel that your contributions aren’t being recognised or your opinions are being ignored, then this can make you feel under appreciated. This is not a nice feeling for anyone. Taking your great ideas, opinions and contributions to a different company will be like a breath of fresh air for them and you’ll get the positive reinforcements you need too.
